City Council to consider regulation of fencing material

MUNCIE, Ind. − City Council will meet Monday night and will consider an ordinance aimed at regulating the material to be used in fences within the city.

Ordinance 1-23 would amend the city zoning ordinance to to forbid the use of plywood, broken board, wood pallets, chicken wire, scrap lumber, discarded construction materials, sheet metal, wire mesh, tarps, cloth, canvass and similar materials from being used in new fencing in the city. City Council to consider regulation of fencing material

The ordinance was introduced in January and comes with a favorable recommendation from the Delaware-Muncie Plan Commission.

Fences already in use will not be considered in violation of the the proposed ordinance, but when as least 50 percent of a fence is replaced, the entire fence must meet the specifications in the ordinance.

Also on Monday, City Council will vote on whether to join a group of beneficiaries to a settlement agreement by Meijer stores regarding the opioid crisis and its sale of the prescription drugs.

Meijer Pharmacy is one of several pharmacies that has agreed to settle for damages caused by opioid addiction that became rampant in the past decade. Meijer will pay $35 million in its current settlement with communities still suffering from opioid use ion the population.
